The Difference You Make
Big changes start with you
Each time you mail back a Preserve toothbrush for recycling, 15 grams of plastic are given a new life. That’s 15 grams of plastic that don’t have to be manufactured from scratch, by drawing on the Earth’s non-renewable resources.
Each time you place a #5 plastic product (like a yogurt cup or a take-out container), into a Preserve Gimme 5 bin, those plastics transform from trash into treasure—in particular, sleek new Preserve products.
And each time you share a set of Preserve tableware with friends and community members at a picnic, fundraiser or party, you’re not just saving money—your decision means that an entire party’s worth of disposable tableware won’t be sitting in a landfill forever, after being used only once.
Together, with our customers—gram by gram, we are saving the water, energy, oil, and natural gas that it takes to make virgin plastics. And we couldn’t do any of it without you.
Systemic change requires partners
Currently, about 20% of Preserve toothbrushes are returned to us for recycling. Given that 20% is also the recycling rate of the plastic Americans recycle the most (PET #1 plastic), some would say that we’re right on the mark. But our mission isn’t about meeting existing standards—it’s about raising them, by changing expectations and educating consumers.
In order to live sustainably—to meet our current needs without compromising the means of future generations to meet theirs—one key step we need to take together is to reach a 100% recycling rate.
To initiate change on a broad scale, we’re sharing what we’ve learned and are engaging partners in product take-back systems. Through collaboration with our partners Stonyfield, Brita, Burt’s Bees, and Berry Plastics, our Gimme 5 program allows customers like you to recycle a host of #5 plastic products and packages. This adds up to about 130,000 pounds of recycled plastic every year.
Together, with our partners—gram by gram, pound by pound, we’re making a difference. And that difference begins with you.
From beginning to end to beginning again
Since 1996, we’ve made our products with 100% recycled plastics—that adds up to literally tons of plastic that didn’t require anything new from the Earth for the raw material.
We’ve also designed our products to be recycled easily; we run mail-back programs to close the life cycle loop on our products, and we started the Preserve Gimme 5 program to encourage #5 plastics recycling in communities across the country.
Together, with our program participants, we’ve already recycled over 1 million pounds of #5 polypropylene plastic. That’s a lot of plastic—and a lot of progress.
Thank you for recycling.
