What is a Certified B Corp?
A “Certified B Corp” is a new kind of business that’s guided by a set of socially- and environmentally-focused principles that differentiate it from familiar non-profit and traditional corporate models. To quote from The B Corp Declaration, these companies “envision a new sector of the economy which harnesses the power of private enterprise to create public benefit. This sector is comprised of a new type of corporation—the B Corporation—which is purpose-driven, and creates benefit for all stakeholders, not just shareholders.”
For sustainable businesses like Preserve, B Corp certification is a public declaration of the values and systems that underpin our entire business. B Corps are certified by the nonprofit B Lab to meet rigorous standards of social and environmental performance, accountability and transparency.

A Q&A with Ben Anderson, Former COO of Preserve
Q. What business benefits do you directly attribute to your B Corp certification?
The B Corp Certification certifies the entire company, not just a single product or aspect of what we do; this provides clarity in a market saturated with a wide range of certifications. And by entering Preserve into the B Corp certification process, we’re also helping to raise awareness of the B Corp brand, by placing the certification logo on the products we offer. We believe this will then help build the field and lead to more systemic change. We also greatly value the certification process and the movement within our company to communicate better the many ways in which we create social value, to measure these efforts, and to aspire to enhance this social value of Preserve.
Q. What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome to certify as a B Corp?
We cleared the threshold to become a Certified B Corp immediately, because of the business principles that were ingrained in the Preserve DNA at our company’s founding. The challenging part of the process was more clearly defining our own processes, clarifying them and getting them down on paper—and turning them into official, operational policies. We also used the certification tool to refine our practices, which added some time for development and implementation before we formally became a B Corp.
Q. What was the biggest surprise about becoming a B Corporation?
Simply that it was so clear that we should have applied sooner! We didn’t fully realize the value of the process for our team until we took it on.
Q. If you could change one thing about the B Corp movement, what would it be?
The B Corp movement would advance more quickly if the B Corps could maximize giving and getting business from one another. It would be ideal to have a tool or marketplace that made this matchmaking more efficient. By helping each other grow, we’d all be more readily equipped to “be the change we seek.”
