Enjoying our Earth
Isn’t it amazing that animals and humans breathe in what trees exhale; and trees breathe in what we exhale? Isn’t it amazing how interdependent all of the living things on Earth are?

In the height of this time of concern about the warming of our climate and the degradation of many eco-systems, it is just as important to refresh our souls and minds by enjoying the natural beauty of our Earth as it is to create new ways to reduce our impact.

Here in Boston, we are experiencing our first taste of spring. Everyone is outside—and smiling! Springtime and Earth Month are as much about taking stock of our environmental impact as about celebrating the beauty that surrounds us. We stumbled upon this photo essay "In the Time of Trees" in Time Magazine, and thought you might enjoy it. For those of us who have been “desk-side” more than we’d like, it offers a nice screen visual of the beauty of the natural world and all that we have to preserve.

Preserve on Plastics
For the health of our consumers and the environment, we aim to minimize the impact caused by our products.

We are aware of the increasing—and often confusing—information coming your way about plastics recently, specifically about the additives in plastics that may interact with the body’s hormones (also known as the endocrine system). We thought it would helpful for you to know three things:

1. There are thousands of types of plastics, and most of these do not contain bisphenol A (BPA) or phthalates.
2. Polypropylene (PP, #5—the type of plastic we use in our Preserve products) does not contain phthalates or BPA.
3. Not all containers labeled as #7 are polycarbonate (a plastic known to contain BPA). #7 is the identification used for "other" plastics, those outside of the most common 1 though 6. Preserve uses cellulose (wood-based) plastic packaging for our toothbrush and razor which is in the other, #7 category. There is no BPA in this cellulose material.

Some additives, like BPA and phthalates, in plastics seem to be able to mimic the action of hormones (often estrogen) making these additives endocrine disruptors. When present in specific plastics, these additives are dispersed within the bulk of the plastic product and are generally not leachable or extractable to any significant extent. But understanding the risk from endocrine disrupters, especially of their reproductive, neuronal and/or immunological effects, is extremely complex and more research needs to be done. We pledge to be on the cutting edge of understanding these scientific developments as they pertain to plastics for the health of you, our consumers, and the Earth.

At Recycline, as we have followed the scientific research and debate closely, we think the precautionary principle should apply. Thus we do not introduce any possible endocrine disrupters into our plastics. Furthermore, our systems are designed to make all of our Preserve plastics from recycled products and packaging that have not had these chemicals introduced to them. We also subject our Preserve plastics to laboratory leaching tests to ensure that the metals are at levels that are less than what the EPA allows in drinking water.

In the coming weeks and months, we will issue further statements on the nature of plastics commonly used in consumer goods including Preserve products. Since our founding in 1996, we have been committed to being a company that operates with absolute honesty and transparency. We only make products that we feel good about using at home with our families. We look forward to sharing more research and resources on this growing conversation about the nature of plastics.

Counting Up the Green Coups
While there are many recent green coups at Recycline, here are just a few: Justin has biked to work 5 times already this year (40 mile round trip); the rest of the time he takes the train. Christie has nearly finished the first leg of a life cycle analysis documenting the reduced impact that our recycled material for our products has over virgin, petro-chemical plastics. And the main Hudson family vehicle still runs on recycled grease.

Please tell us your latest effort for the Earth. Take our brief survey about Earth Month and enter to win one of three sets of our new Preserve Kitchen mixing bowls. Take our brief survey

Gimme 5 Whole Foods Reston Parker
Yogurt cups, hummus containers and cottage cheese tubs—what do these items have in common? All are usually made from #5 plastic, polypropylene, and, as a Preserver, you know that in most communities they face dim prospects for life beyond the trash can.

It is this unsettling truth about #5 plastic recycling that inspired Recycline founder, Eric Hudson, to develop a line of useful products that capitalized on this wasted resource. While many municipalities have made progress in putting #5s to good use, most today still do not recycle #5, and simply send the offending (and highly valuable!) materials to the landfill. Erin Kerr, Green Mission Specialist for Whole Foods Market in Fairfax County, VA saw an opportunity to spur more #5 recycling by joining with Recycline to set up a Whole Foods Market recycling center to collect #5 plastic containers to be turned into Preserve products.

On Earth Day, the Reston, VA Whole Foods Market debuted a #5 collection site. This collection station stands near the store’s front door and enables consumers to keep their #5 plastics out of the landfill and also be confident that their action is part of an environmentally conscious cycle—one that involves a second incarnation as a Preserve toothbrush or razor handle. So far this program has been a booming success and we’re looking forward to rolling this collection initiative out across the country.
