Local Heroes Contest – Meet the Winners

Local Heroes

The partners behind the Preserve Gimme 5 program scoured the country to find avid recyclers. Now we're recognizing your inspiring efforts.

Hearing the call to recognize inspiring recycling efforts, dedicated nominees came out of the woodwork with vibrant examples of stirring and heartwarming recycling activities in their local communities. Profiles emerged of local heroes including the Recycling Runner, the Eco-dentist, the Recycling Nerd, the Social Maven and the Educator. But it was a Massachusetts woman who stood out as the ultimate local hero. Gayle Gordon's role as a Gimme 5 program advocate led to the adoption of the program at her local Whole Foods.

Make an impact on local green energy projects

Preserve partner New Generation Energy is making America's neighborhoods healthier and more sustainable by helping nonprofits and small businesses develop and fund green energy projects.

They have created a listing site that promotes a variety of projects nationwide -- from energy-efficiency endeavors in Massachusetts to weatherization enhancements in Minnesota. With the click of a button, eco-conscious individuals can support a project, create greener communities, and lower their carbon footprints. And the donation is just the beginning. The New Generation Energy blog lets supporters track the progress of a project -- and learn more about the community it affects -- with videos, photos, articles, and more.
